Most Miami Beach locals would scoff at the idea of taking an audio tour of their own city. Then again, many locals would probably be at a loss if friends visiting from out of town were to ask any question about the history of the beach. “Where did Capone live? Lincoln Road is just a mall, right? Is the Delano like, from the 20′s or something?” “This is where they killed Versace,” they might sheepishly answer.
Discovery Miami Beach Tours is a new company that offers multimedia, self guided tours through some of the most important landmarks in Miami Beach. But like anything in Miami, even audio tours need to have a certain level of glitz if they’re going to draw a crowd. Along with their interactive handsets, what sets Discovery apart is that the narrations are done by local celebrities, artists, chefs and some of the most influential people throughout the history of the city.
Some examples are Steve Sawitz, the 4th generation owner of Joe’s Stone Crab, which was founded by his great grandfather in 1913, queen of nightlife PR Tara Solomon, and pop artist Romero Britto. They also have the support of the Miami Design Preservation League, lending some architectural cred. Discovery has also worked out deals with Deco Bikes, Big Bus Tours and some partnerships with major cultural institutions are in the works.
Even though tonight was Discovery’s official launch party over at Nikki Beach, business is booming and they’re already getting some national press. These guys are close friends of P81 and we know they’ll be hugely successful.
